AGA & AWGA Clubs in Compliance with New USGA Handicap Rules
JOINT STATEMENT BY THE ARIZONA
WOMEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION
AND ARIZONA GOLF ASSOCIATION
PHOENIX (July 10, 2006) -- The United States Golf Association
has set a new standard for issuing handicaps that went
into effect July 1, 2006. Under the new standard, each
club must have both a member certified in the rules
and applications of the USGA Handicap System and the
Club must be licensed to issue handicaps.
The USGA authorizes the Arizona Handicap Network, a joint venture of the Arizona Women's Golf Association (AWGA) and the Arizona Golf Association (AGA), to grant licenses to their member clubs provided the Associations certify they are in compliance. Other independent clubs, non-members of the associations, can apply directly to the USGA, but must meet the same strict standards and meet the local requirements as established by the Associations.
All 675 clubs belonging to AZHN are in compliance, which represents more than 90,000 golfers.
Any independent club that has not yet applied for and been granted a license by the USGA can no longer claim to offer USGA Handicaps nor can they use the USGA's calculations to compute handicaps. This includes the Internet based-clubs such as Golfnow.com (formerly Golf602.com), Golf520.com, Golfsmith, Golf Channel, and certain clubs managed by the National Golf Network (NGN).
Clubs not listed should contact the Arizona Handicap Network at 602-944-3035 or 602-253-5655 for information on either joining the AZHN or making application to the USGA for a license.
If you would like to have a USGA handicap and join the Associations contact the AWGA at 800-442-2942 or on their Web site at www.awga.org. The AGA can be reached at 800-458-8484 or visit their Web site at www.azgolf.org.
